Let’s Get Real About CO2

We are wondering about the CO2 created in producing and transporting SAF & Renewable/Bio-Diesels (the “Green Fuels”) vs. the CO2 saved by using those Fuels.

The Situation

As a proforma flight example (PFE) here, let’s consider a typical commercial flight from London to New York City in a Jumbo Jet plane. It will carry 500/550 passengers and their baggage & food plus other freight and, consume 70 tonnes of jet fuel. Each gallon of this fossil fuel cost US$2.40 and generates 3.16 Kgs of CO2.  SAF costs US$9.00 per Gallon and weighs 0.8 Kg/Liter. The emissions from Agriculture activities is 2,500 Kg of CO2 per acre/year from fossil fuels used for equipment + cultivation and crop soil emissions. A 100.000 MT Vessel to transport fuel, produces 0.60 Kg of CO2 per Kilometer traveled

Consider first the amount of CO2 produced from the fossil fuels used for harvesting & amassing newly-grown organic matter (e.g., corn and or other such field crops) and/or collecting & consolidating the diverse types of waste organic matter employed as feedstocks for producing the Green Fuels (individually or together, the “Collectible Feedstocks”), and then delivering those Collectible Feedstocks to the facilities where they are processed into the Green Fuels.

Based on generally available information regarding the current locations of such Collectible Feedstocks and processing facilities and the PFE, the average amount of CO2 generated by these activities would be on the order of 0.95 tonnes to produce sufficient SAF for a flight with a 10% SAF blended fuel and 9.5 tonnes with neat SAF.

Consider next the amount of CO2 produced from fossil fuels for shipping the SAF from the facilities where they are produced to the end-use destinations.

Based on generally available information regarding the current locations of such processing facilities and end-use destinations and the PFE, the average amount of CO2 generated by these activities would be on the order of 2.9 tonnes for transporting sufficient SAF for a 10% SAF blended fuel, and 29 tonnes for neat SAF.

In these cases, the total combined amount of CO2 generated from fossil fuels for these activities would be on the order of 3.85 tonnes for a 10% SAF blended fuel and 38.5 tonnes with neat SAF, and the total amount of CO2 saved by using SAF for that flight would be 18.5 tonnes with a 10% SAF blended fuel (-7.1%) and 195 tonnes with neat SAF (-80%). With a Cost increase of US$15,800 with a 10% SAF blended fuel, and a cost increase of US$148,300 with neat SAF or, US$270 increase per ticket on a one-way trip from London to NYC for fuel alone.

What to do? Team up with Summit!!

Produce the consistent quality Splants Feedstock at scale, any scale, at or proximate to your existing refinery. This capability is provided uniquely by Summit’s Cultivatron and NuSFX Feedstock Preconditioning Solution Modules.

The Advantage of using Summit’s NuSAFuel Solutions in the PFE is a reduction in CO2 emissions in the range of 207 tonnes, or (-85%) with neat SAF, with a total cost increase of only US$4,700 or US$8.55 per ticket, due to production “in situ” and efficient feedstock pre-conditioning.
